Hypothyroidism symptoms often creep in so slowly that many people mistake them for ordinary tiredness, stress or ageing. When the thyroid, a small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck, makes too little hormone, the whole body slows down, and I see this in my clinic every week. In this guide I explain the signs to watch for, why it happens and how homeopathic treatment can support you alongside regular thyroid tests.

Hypothyroidism: when hormones run low, the body slows down Underactive thyroid Low T3 and T4, high TSH Tiredness Weight gain Feeling cold Dry skin Hair fall Low mood Confirm with blood tests TSH, free T4 and anti-TPO antibodies Supportive homeopathic care with regular TSH monitoring

What Is Hypothyroidism and Why Is It So Common in India?

Hypothyroidism means the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. These hormones set the speed at which your body uses energy, so low levels affect your heart rate, digestion, skin, hair, mood, periods and body weight. It is confirmed with a blood test, mainly TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), which rises when the thyroid is underactive.

Based on articles retrieved from PubMed, a study across eight Indian cities found hypothyroidism in about 11% of adults, nearly 1 in 10 (study). It was much more common in women (15.86%) than in men (5.02%), and 3.47% of adults had hypothyroidism that had never been detected before. Another 8% had subclinical hypothyroidism, and about 22% showed anti-TPO antibodies, a sign of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Hypothyroidism Symptoms: What Should You Watch For?

Common signs in adults

  • Constant tiredness and sleepiness even after a full night of rest.
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight despite normal eating.
  • Feeling cold when others are comfortable.
  • Dry skin, brittle nails and hair fall, with thinning hair and dry scalp.
  • Constipation, bloating and a sluggish digestion.
  • Puffy face, hoarse voice or swelling in the neck (goitre).
  • Muscle aches, joint stiffness and a slow heartbeat.
  • Low mood, poor memory and brain fog.

Hypothyroidism symptoms in women

Women are affected far more often, and the thyroid can show up through the menstrual cycle: heavy, long or irregular periods, trouble conceiving, or a tired and low phase after delivery. If you also struggle with hair fall, my article on thyroid disorders and hair fall explains the link in detail.

Quick Facts

  • About 1 in 10 Indian adults has hypothyroidism, and women are affected more.
  • Classic hypothyroidism symptoms are tiredness, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin and hair fall.
  • TSH, free T4 and anti-TPO tests confirm the diagnosis.
  • Homeopathy offers supportive care. It does not replace your thyroid tablets or regular tests.

What Causes Hypothyroidism?

  • Hashimoto thyroiditis: an autoimmune condition and the most common cause.
  • Iodine imbalance: too little or too much iodine can disturb thyroid function.
  • Thyroid surgery or radioiodine treatment given earlier for another thyroid problem.
  • Pregnancy and the postpartum period, when the thyroid can become temporarily underactive.
  • Certain medicines and a family history of thyroid disease.

Long-term stress and poor sleep do not cause hypothyroidism on their own, but they can make symptoms feel heavier, which is why I always look at the whole person.

Homeopathic Treatment for Hypothyroidism: How Can It Help?

Homeopathic treatment for hypothyroidism is individualised. Two people with the same TSH value may receive different medicines, because I choose a remedy after detailed case-taking: your symptoms, body type, emotional state, triggers and family history. The aim is to ease symptoms, support your energy and improve your overall well-being.

According to PubMed, a retrospective series of 19 women over 40 with subclinical hypothyroidism (TSH 5 to 10 mIU/L) treated only with individualised homeopathic medicines reported TSH returning to the normal range in 68% of them (study). This is a small case series, not proof, so I see it as encouraging and not conclusive.

Remedies that homeopathic physicians commonly consider for thyroid-related complaints include:

  • Calcarea carbonica: tiredness, weight gain, chilliness and sweating of the head.
  • Graphites: dry, cracked skin, constipation and slow weight gain.
  • Sepia: exhaustion, low mood and hormonal or menstrual complaints in women.
  • Natrum muriaticum: dry skin, hair fall and low mood after emotional strain.

These are examples only. Please do not self-prescribe, and never stop or reduce your thyroid tablets without your doctor's advice. Any change in dose should follow a repeat TSH test, usually after 6 to 8 weeks.

Diet and Lifestyle Tips for Hypothyroidism

  • Take levothyroxine on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, and keep calcium and iron supplements at least 4 hours apart.
  • Use iodised salt in normal amounts. Avoid iodine or kelp supplements unless your doctor advises them.
  • Include protein, eggs, curd, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and seasonal fruit and vegetables.
  • Cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli are fine when cooked and eaten in normal portions. Avoid very large amounts of raw soy products.
  • Drink enough water and add fibre such as oats, dalia and green vegetables for constipation.
  • Walk daily, practise gentle yoga such as Surya Namaskar and slow breathing, and sleep 7 to 8 hours.

When Should You See a Doctor for Thyroid Symptoms?

Please book a thyroid check without delay if you notice any of these:

  • Hypothyroidism symptoms such as tiredness, weight gain, hair fall or constipation lasting more than a few weeks.
  • A swelling in the front of the neck, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.
  • Irregular periods, trouble conceiving, or a planned or ongoing pregnancy.
  • Extreme drowsiness, confusion, a very slow heartbeat or severe cold intolerance, which need urgent medical care.

FAQs on Hypothyroidism Symptoms and Homeopathy

What are the first symptoms of hypothyroidism?

The earliest hypothyroidism symptoms are usually constant tiredness, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, hair fall and constipation. Because they build up slowly, they are often put down to stress or age. A simple TSH blood test can confirm whether the thyroid is underactive.

Can homeopathy cure hypothyroidism?

Homeopathy cannot promise a cure, especially when the cause is autoimmune (Hashimoto thyroiditis). Individualised homeopathic treatment can offer supportive care by easing symptoms and improving overall well-being, while your TSH is monitored regularly.

Can I stop my thyroid tablets if I take homeopathic medicines?

No. Never stop or reduce levothyroxine on your own. Any change in the dose should be decided with your treating physician after repeat thyroid tests. Homeopathy is best used as supportive care alongside standard treatment.

Can I get an online homeopathy consultation for thyroid problems?

Yes. Dr. Astha Pathak offers online homeopathy consultation across India as well as in-clinic visits in Shahdol. You can book through WhatsApp or by phone.
